Where do you play ANZ Tennis Hot Shots and what stage do you currently play?
I play at Eastcourts Tennis Club and now I’m in a Green Ball talent development squad. Earlier this year I was in Polar Bears.
What do you like about playing tennis?
Everything! It’s not only fun, but every time you step out on court it’s like an adventure where you never know how it will turn out. I love how you can develop relationships when you’re playing and it’s always a fun environment. It’s not a rough sport, it’s all about the touch on the ball and how you treat your opponent. And also, I love how it’s a game of self control. Sometimes when a match gets tough I imagine there’s no-one on the other side of the net. You have to win against yourself. It’s up to you to keep your head while others are losing theirs.
What is your favourite shot and why?
My favourite shot would definitely be the backhand slice on the stretch. It’s such a nice, smooth motion that feels so good. There’s just something about it.
Who do you like playing tennis with?
I love playing tennis with my friend Piper at Eastcourts. She is a very good tennis player and she keeps everything lighthearted. She’s such a great sportsperson as well. She’s makes the game feel so fun and free.
Do you have a favourite tennis player?
My favourite tennis player is Roger Federer because of the way he gets such great feel and control on a slice – and many other ground strokes! I also really admire how naturally sportsmanslike he is when he comes out to compete.
Do you have any tennis goals?
Yes, I have two main ones. First I would like to win division one in my local junior tennis comp (called Eastern Suburbs Tennis League). Secondly, when I turn 10 I would like to enter and win my first Tennis Australia under-12 tournament. And I’d like to win Wimbledon one day too.
What is your favourite tennis memory? Have you attended any tournaments?
I have entered a lot of under-10 round robins around Sydney but my favourite tennis memory would have to be the second tournament I entered. It was an under-10’s round robin and I lost every single match until the last one I played that day. This reflects very much on how, win or lose, every point makes you a better tennis player.
How does it feel to be nominated for the ANZ Tennis Hot Shot of the Year award?
When my Dad first told me about it, I ran around my whole school, and then I ran around almost the whole of my local park. I’m just so excited. It feels like a dream, but it’s true! And it’s amazing!
What are you looking forward to when you visit the Australian Open?
I can’t wait for that moment just before they announce the winner of the ANZ Tennis Hot Shot Of the Year. I’m also really looking forward to watching the high level play in some of the pro matches from the crowd instead of from my lounge room! I’m also looking forward to just being in Rod Laver Arena. Even just having the chance to hit on that court would feel like it was the best day of my life.
